Between the Tides

Project type

Exhibition

Date

April 2026

Location

Jim Mooney Gallery, George Town

Between the Tides brings together the collaborative practice of Travis Bell and Elizabeth Braid, who first met during their Honours year at the University of Tasmania. Since then, their practices have developed in parallel, each shaped by a distinct yet resonant approach to material, place, and process. Both have presented solo exhibitions at the Devonport Regional Gallery and Sawtooth ARI, and were both included in RISE 2023 at Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, which celebrated
emerging Tasmanian artists.

Based in Northern Tasmania, Travis leads the ceramics department at UTAS, while Elizabeth coordinates the inclusive studio REBL+SHY on the northwest coast. Both deeply committed to the role of artmaking as a place for connection, inquiry, and transformation within their communities.

After years of conversation, their first collaboration took place in 2025 for the Bay of Fires Art Prize. The project was developed swiftly and intuitively, pushing their practices into new areas of exploration. This experience opened new directions for each artist and expanded the possibilities of both their individual and shared approaches.

Between the Tides marks their first exhibition together and reflects an ongoing dialogue between their practices.
