Trickster

Project type

Painting

Date

2025

Location

Tasmania

The wind is a trickster. Trickster contemplates the movement of the wind across the surface of the ocean where I live on tommeginne country, north west lutruwita/Tasmania. Sometimes the wind travels like a creature across the surface of the waves, darting and dashing about. It plays with the water, pushes waves into each other before smoothing them over again. In making this piece I followed this remembered movement. Water and paint were spilled and pushed about with a brush. Once dry I let my chalk covered palms sweep over the page creating my own unpredictable patterns. Charcoal was dragged in broken lines, my hand jumping as though catching the chop of waves, leaving gaps for the lulls, like the ocean’s inhale of breath. Each layer interacts with the last, patterns emerging and shifting, never fixed. The work reflects the restless patterns of the sea, a trickster’s playground.
